When my almost 19-year-old son came home for his first winter break from college on December 1st, he asked me: "Where are our advents calendar socks?"

And my 16-year-old son chimed in: "Yes, don't we get socks this year?" 🤨

Oops... I had thought: "I'm done with that, they are too old for my homemade advents calendar..." 🤔
But I was wrong.

Many years ago, when they were toddlers, I didn't have the traditional German advents calendar at hand, here in the US.

So I created my own unique advents calendars for my unique boys. Being European, I like to reuse and upcycle things first. And the single socks that the dryer hadn't eaten cam in very handy, and are certainly unique. 🤪

Realizing that my almost 19-year-old feels he is not too old, I did some supermom magic. 🦸🏻‍♀️

In just a few hours I got 24 little gifts. And I filled 24 mismatched socks for each of my boys. I chose nice chocolates, pencils, mini aftershaves and all kinds of other small, but (mostly) useful little items. 🎁

And then I declared innocently, that there was "just a little delay". 😇

My sons smiled happily. My heart warmed. Who would have thought that these little traditions and small gifts bring so much joy? 😀

I just planted this passionfruit vine in the spring. And I'm so thrilled about harvesting my first passionfruit of the season. 💜

When I picked the deep purple fruit, I realized how much I pampered the vine this year. And then I thought, that good relationship building sounds just like pampering this passionfruit vine.

🌱 Planting the seed/seedling.
💧 Water frequently.
🌿 Fertilized regularly.
🌞 Warmth and sunshine.
🤗 Special ingredient: Encouraging words of love.

After a lot of nurturing, I got to harvest that first purple passionfruit!

Only when I keep nurturing the plant it'll grow and grow and I'll get years of plentiful harvests of these yummy, healthy, and exotic fruits. 😋

BTW, my very favorite ways to enjoy passionfruit is eating them with dark chocolate ice cream or adding them to a glass of champagne. Devine! Try it! 🍫 🥂

So what has nurturing this passionfruit vine to do with relationship building?

When growing up in Germany, I was often "annoyed" when my parents constantly reminded me to turn off the light, conserve water, and recycle every single glass or water bottle... 🤪

For as long as I can remember shoppers had to pay a "recycle bottle fee". Up until today people return the bottles to the store to get their cash back.

You might imagine, I was "motivated" by my parents to reuse and recycle from a very young age on. 😘

So it comes to me naturally, to use and support eco-friendly products, as much as I can. At my home, I have a gray water system that collects my washing machine water and sprinkle my drought-resistant plants. I got solar panels on my roof, I collect water when I wash my veggies in the kitchen sink, or until the shower water gets hot. I can't help it... And an eco-friendly car is on my wishlist. ♻️

I'm grateful we have lots of choices to do our part and how we can be good to your planet. Small or large, all of it counts. Of course, many of us can improve, but everybody does what they feel is right for them. 😎

Some of these "National Something Days" are silly, some are fun (you can check out the full calendar here). Of course, I liked this one because it's my mission to bring more attention to kindness - especially in the business world.

I believe that each act of kindness, helps to make somebody feel good and the world a better place. 🥰

BUT I thought: "We can top this"!! How about a "National CONSCIOUS Acts of Kindness Day"? Ha! I actually registered it! Please keep your fingers crossed that my suggestion will be accepted! 🤞

There are many ways to be kind, but one is a simple (?) "Thank You". I noticed, that we often say "Thank you" just out of a habit and because we were raised to being polite. Too often, it seems unconscious and automatic.

We all are grateful for your clients, teams, and employees, right? Do you call, send Thank You emails, do shout-outs on social media, and maybe even send a postcard once in a while? When was the last time you expressed really heartfelt kindness to your business people? 🤔

Hugs have become of different importance to many of us within the last year. I’m European, so yes, I (used to) hug pretty much everybody. But all has changed during this pandemic. Is anybody else feeling a little "hug deprived" sometimes? 😘

Even we can't just hug everybody in person anymore, we can still do something! We can give safe, socially distanced air and virtual hugs to all our friends, family, heroes, and neighbors. Maybe not only the people that came to mind first? I want to point out: Don't forget your business partners! They need some extra TLC too! 🤩

Yesterday I joined my monthly "Kindness Circle" with Jill Lublin, the author of "The Profit of Kindness" (and many others), and I was very impressed by the speaker Steve Farber (Love is Good Business), author of "The Radical L. E. A. P." (One who cultivates love, generates energy, inspires audacity, and provides proof). I ordered his book right away and can't wait to read it! It might be fun to read or listen for you too? 📖

Farber's book reveals the questions leaders must ask themselves in order to truly become extreme leaders, including:

Why do I love my business, my employees, and my customers, and how can I show them how I feel?
What effect do my actions have on the energy of the people around me? (OR, what are the unnecessary, time-consuming, bureaucratic policies and procedures that suck our energy?)
How are we going to change the world of our company, our employees, customers, marketplace, and industry?
What have I done today to show my commitment to my colleagues and customers?

I felt so good after the "Kindness Circle" yesterday, and felt so understood with my mission. I'm passionate about relationship marketing, and what magic it can do for you and your business. But then I thought "this is PERFECT!" The new year of 2021 IS still in the fog. We gotta remember that the sun always comes out, and we can ready with a great plan AND sunglasses! 😎

While planning and setting my goals for 2021 I was reflecting on my mission for Good Wave Gifts, and how I came to create this company with my passion and unique skills. 🤔
I thought back to my time as a marketing director for corporate companies in Germany. Especially those years of the early internet, when I joked that I was “bleeding purple” doing marketing and branding at Yahoo! Germany. We came a long way, right? No need to explain the internet anymore. And you do know Yahoo!? 😘
The daily challenge from my bosses in the US was to maximize every penny of my marketing budget. I managed to "barter" lots of the "traditional" advertising from national tv-spots, magazines to radio, and more - offering win-win solutions to the other media companies. My official nickname at Yahoo! was "Barter Queen. 👸🏻

Another part of my expertise was finding new, creative, and different marketing opportunities that would help us stand out and increase our brand recognition. AND they had to be super cost-efficient. Ha! 🤪
So, promotional gifts were always in my marketing budget because they can have a great return on investment. My goal was, achieving as many "impressions" with advertising clients (B to B) and users (B to C) as possible.

After 18 years in the US, the Thanksgiving holiday with its warm traditions has become most precious to me. I talked about gratitude a lot in the last few months. Not only is gratitude an important part of my Good Wave Gifts business, but also in my private life. Counting my blessings every day has made a big difference in handling challenges during this "unusual" and crazy year. I feel that I cannot be worried and grateful at the same time. I hope you have a lot to be grateful for too! 🙏🏼
